SIGHT SEE

The Ecolodge is a magical place to be able to explore Arthur's Pass National Park day walks, with the Bealey Spur Track starting at the front door. Explore the mountain bike trails of the Craigieburn area or skiing at the five nearby fields or just be inspired by the scenery.

I’m a very experienced tramper (hiker). There are day packs, walking poles, crampons and snow shoes available for your use. Packed lunches can be provided on request.

I have a fulltime job as a DOC ranger at the Arthur’s Pass Visitor Centre, so have firsthand knowledge and experience of suitable walks in the area.

I have a keen interest in New Zealand geography, participate in the sport of rogaining (long distance cross-country navigation on foot), enjoy spinning sheep’s wool, have had a lengthy involvement in Scouting, packraft and am a civil marriage celebrant.

WATER ACTIVITIES

Mt White Bridge

Mt White bridge is the launching place for kayaking and river rafting on the upper reaches of the Waimakariri River. There are several companies offering guided trips on the Waimak, which begins as a wide braided shingle riverbed, but becomes narrow in the gorge section. The trips exit at Woodstock, close to Springfield. There are also jet boat rides up the river.

SKIING

Temple Basin Ski Field

Temple Basin is a beautiful club field that overlooks the Arthur's Pass township.

There are 5 ski fields within 40 minutes by road from Arthur's Pass. The four club fields and the commercial one offer a variety of terrain and facilities with prices to match.

TRAMPING

Bealey Spur

A delightful track through mountain beech forest to several places, overlooking the upper Waimakariri River and Klondyke Corner.

After 90 minutes, the track passes an area of alpine tarns, which freeze over in the winter and a further hour will probably see you at the historic Bealey Spur Hut. This area is popular with ski tourists. This is also the location of the EcoLodge.

Avalanche Peak

Avalanche Peak, at 1833m, is a fabulous spot above the bushline for one to marvel at the beauty of the mountain peaks, surrounding the Bealey valley, Arthurs Pass township and the spectacular Crow Glacier on the flanks of Mt Rolleston. This can be climbed as a day trip or as a lunch stop to the Crow Hut on an overnighter.
